NISS members suspected of killing Darfuri student in Khartoum - report and comment

It appears that the National Intelligence and Security Services [NISS] in Sudan has committed another criminal act after Muhammad Musa, a young Darfuri student of Khartoum University, was found dead with his body bearing traces of torture.

The 25-year-old deceased student, according to blog postings on Sudaneseonline.com, is an active member of the United Popular Front [UPF], the student wing of the Darfur rebels Sudan Liberation Movement led by the France-based Abd-al-Wahid Muhammad Nur.

According to initial reports, he was taken from in front of the Education College of Khartoum University on Wednesday 10 February 2010 at 5:30 by a pickup veichle to an unknown destination. His dead body, which bore bruises and injuries sustained from torture, was found yesterday, 11 February, dumped at a school building in Omdurman.

My comment:

I am deeply saddened by this outrageous crime whose perpetrators must be brought to justice. The National Security Law that was passed recently grants wide powers to NISS members with no accountability for their actions. Civil society organization must act now to bring an end to the impunity enjoyed by NISS members.
